It's even more than that. He was going to report on them to the government, which would lead to them being killed. It's like how people in Nazi Germany reported their family, friends, and neighbors knowing full well they would get shipped off to death camps. Mad fucked up. I can't really be sympathetic to a guy who's gonna out his wife and baby to a genocidal regime. Momma deserved better.

About his mother though...I feel sad for her. Looks like after her husband found out who she really was he was mortified and didn't accept her and their son... love you say huh. Also the way her son looked so scared of her must have been really tough too to just leave
