That's because, like the mc, we have been conditioned by our culture and by our societies to think that money equates worth in such a way that we have been taught to disbelieve anyone that gives money and claims to want nothing in return. "No such thing as a free lunch" or "Be cautious if it is too good to be true/too good of a deal [with money]". We have become a system built on exchanges that we don't know what to do when faced with someone who is performing an act of kindness or selflessness when it comes to money or good deeds. For example, I have a hard time having people buy me dinner on dates since I feel that it was something I didn't earn, and that if I let them do so that I will be expected to do something in exchange. I think we expect this much that is bleeds into how we see our characters, and why we vibe with our mc so much. It would be nice to see what caused him to want to be depended on/support others, and if he could let down his emotional guard enough to depend on someone else as well!
