He did want to her for her money true but the lie he told was that HE wanted her money. The truth he had a son, a child with his previous wife and he wants money for his child. He wanted her surname Winter that she got from the emperor. And this made her mad, and she cut off his genitals. Lucius wanted to kill him for hurting the woman he loves, but he respects her punishment for him.
So I guess I'm just confused because I've read spoilers that the doctor tricks Pauliana and steals all her money but... is it really possible for him to trick her if she knows he's just after her money? Does her opinion of him change enough that she starts to think he actually likes her too, or something?
