But the author just never went into it too much because she was always preoccupied with the other original trash MLs, so it seems like these feelings poofed out of nowhere

Yeah, I didn't even notice any romance flags coming from melissa. We all now that nine is head over heals over melissa but I never saw melissa giving any signs towards nine.
