HELL NO! I did not expect that, but I could feel it as the ending was getting closer in the chapter and he was saying all this things, and I'm like "this man is going to kill himself"....arrgh I hate this.

*To contribute to why Aroma killed himself. After RE reading the chapter I noticed Arima saying (this is a paraphrase of what he meant) that the battle doesn't end until one of them is slain. So my theory is that he knew that he would keep fighting until one of them dies, and since he couldn't kill kaneki, and kaneki wouldn't kill him, his only option in his mind was to kill himself so the fight could end, if not Arima would have continued engaging in a fruitless battle with kaneki.* just a theory.

    Now that I'm re-reading, Arima kept saying 'I can kill you with this many moves" and the whole time I'm thinking only he's hesitating. I'm also assuming that when Kaneki landed that blow, he only disarmed Arima. I'm thinking he could have killed him then but chose not to. I know there was much more to Arima, it's just....why!
