I've read the novel. He did alter his face to look like cinian so his father would like him more. It also becomes a major plot point later on in the novel.

Honestly though when wowo was screaming the way he was the daycare should have done something. Like at least ask for ID xinian just came and took him and despite wowo screaming no they just let him go no problem.
