They're both related to the kid but they're not blood related. The FL is related to the kids mom while the ML is related to the kids dad. I'm not sure if that helps

Yeah but in-laws usually means that they knew about each other for a while. They have no familial bond so calling them family is a stretch. They have no relation except for a kid that neither of them know well
