I think his friend wanted to protect Kataoka and took the bullet for him but I'm not sure

that's why Odajima said he understood how his friend felt taking a bullet for Kataoka.

What I’m getting is that Odajima’s friend died because some enemy mistook him for Kataoka. They kept saying how he looked like he could be Kataoka’s brother so the mix up is possible I think.
