
I think they ask because some languages have you speak as you breathe in or as you breathe out to reach certain pitches because their language is tonal based.
I'm not sure it would cause breathing problems though as it would become something they are used to but it might when they learn a different language and have to change how they breathe in and out as they speak...possibly?

I think the point is you are so into something like a kiss that you forget to breath through your nose when your mouth is occupied. When something that should be natural, like breathing is completely forgotten, it shows a certain level of intensity.
Just a question, do Japanese people talk without breathing with the nose ? Because I've been seeing similar scenes so I guessed so ..
