He wasn't like that before or after the engagement so I think he was like that becaues he was mad about being told to except it and marry the girl by is brother/lover that he secretly sabotaged and told him after the fact so he is happy again and will not act that badly to him again.
Everybody's hating on Mairo here but in a situation like that, I admire him for staying true to his feelings and never swaying and never abandoning his love. He could have easily caved and married the girl just to save himseld the headache and trouble of rebelling, like a lot of people do in real life. But nope, he stuck to it and proved he truly loves Eiki.
