not to get political or anything (joke), but there was a pause before maria said some line and then left... it was when ayne sighed near the end of the chapter. imo that would've been the best time to explain that she had already tried to break it off.
ayne was totally a disgusting person in the past but maria's being so gross about it... like it's not her place at all to tell ayne and assad how to handle their relationship, but she's just going ahead and dreaming up scenarios for her and the duke like "i would have treated him right !!!!!"
for someone who hates how ayne forced assad into an engagement, she sure is ignoring assad's feelings. girl needs to sit down and take a breather before going on a rampage
