not LEVI was the one who chose to save Armin but ERWIN who chose to die.
Erwin didn't want to die because he wanted to know what was in the basement, the reason why his father was killed, where the titans come from etc.
But just before Erwin and the soldiers rode to battle he accepted that he was GONNA die not knowing. :( But when Erwin accepted his death he smiled :((((( like he was free- free from the burden of command.

I had to read it twice , you are right
I admit I was shocked to see that LEVI chose to save Armin in the end. Though if you re-read the previous and current arc again Isayama already knew who he was gonna kill off.
- Reaffirming Armin's Dream was a BIG hint.
- Erwin telling Hanji that they will be the one succeeding him

Also REMINDER that Isayama's Editor (i think it was him) tweeted that before fans read chp 82; they needed to re-read Vol 1 again.
It makes me really sad to see so many fans hating on the Shiganshina trio. It makes it worse that people still say that their character hasn't even developed.... Are you kidding me.... did we read the same manga??? How has EREN/MIKASA/ARMIN not developed as a character?!
