Yes from what I understood it was that since the FL came acquainted with the second prince it puts her in a difficult situation since her brother is friend with the first prince.
If he comes back and claims the Duchy the direct support from the duchy will be for the first prince, but if he still doesn’t come back the support will be for the second prince so they might be a fight for the duchy bc of the support.

the biggest hint as to who is trying to kill the mc is someone who is in support of having the 2nd prince crowned instead of the first.
Think of it this way, if the stepmother had remained in power and her daughter wasn't in jail, they would have backed the 2nd prince's right to the throne by having a big house backing him and in exchange the evil stepsister becomes a part of royalty.
Since this DIDNT happen though, the 2nd prince in theory has now lost a direct backing with a powerful family (even if the mc and him are friends outsiders would presume relations are now cut between the families) and with the recent accomplishments of the first prince's adventure with his two close allies, this jeopardizes the 2nd prince's faction greatly.
So whoever wants the mc dead wants to re-instate the step-mother into power even if she's still under suspicion from the recent attempt on mc's life no matter what and may not know which prince faction the mc is for thus making her a liability to leave alive.
