I think they're just insecure or maybe there's just something, like how they're heart are the castle so if they die the castle will too so maybe it's for concealing there identity to avoid people from looking at them, or it's has a ominous aura which prevents people from approaching them whilst the mask giving them stats
Yep, you're right. If you re-read ch. 26, some spirit or other being tells Letitia that the Halsteads (not sure if just the men or any biological members) are under an ancient curse that will kill them if someone reveals that they aren't monsters and are actually very beautiful/handsome.
