I think he doesn't want him to be chatty just not provoke him or tease him with his straightforward words
Like he's cooperating with them but bratty with him, honestly I too would be wondering why he's making everything so difficult (with the word play) with him and just carefree with everyone.
His sudden interest is a little weird I hope the author is not planning on forcing this rs. It's understandable the curiousity for a suspect's background but why would the prosecutor want ideun to be friendly and chatty with him outta nowhere
