He has to tell her she can’t escape, there would really be a murder order if she did. - he can’t let her be a fool about it, because he would end up having to kill her and he doesn’t want too
so yeah, maybe he’s a meany, but i don’t think he’s « threatening « her in the way you describe, her reaction are related to the book she read , her fear of death comes from herself, he himself did really little
Maybe that’s also why he teases her : how come she’s so scared ? It’s not like he really did anything ? He also gives her ample room to be confortable and to grow - he doesn’t pressure her : so why ?
i think he really likes her - he enjoys her contradictions - she’s terrified, yet she’s brave and witty - I think she’s a rare one for him -
She’s obviously not an evil plotter, she’s very normal - so she’s not a threat but she’s not useless either : maybe she has an intuition about that hornet nest he belongs too, in which case, it’s good : she’s not naive or gullible
She didn’t fuss and she even helped him, despite her fears - She’s terrified, but she still manages to think and act accordingly - like with the arsonists or the jewelery lie to cover him - that’s being ressourceful and brave
I believe he admires and respect that, and that’s more than a little charming for him. I think he’s sincere when he wants her as a partner to help him with his task

It’s a wonderful deep insight, I agree with most of your points. I completely missed that her paranoia stems from her knowledge of the book but I do believe, knowing the story or not, it’s normal to assume the worst when you’re witness of a murder. And by threat I mean the way Regina interprets his teasing as real threat. Halfway to chapter 10 I realized he didn’t mean what he said but not for Regina. The way she’s mentally drained every chapter starts to affect me too.

@littlewolf thanks a lot , i’m glad me being everywhere is not too bothersome, maybe it could be we read the same titles ? (●'◡'●)ノ
@fujiyoshi : i absolutely get you, i don’t feel too good either when the characters are too pressured, i’m not good with too much angst and i hate bullies - but i like that she feels so real : You’re right, Hitchcock made a few movies about being a murder witness, it should be terrifying, even more in a lawless time when you absolutely can’t trust anyone with what you know …
Strangely enough also, also, I believe the « accidental bullying « his teasing made will help her, because she’s getting good at keeping her act together in bad situations and right now, she’s badly in need of her brain and self control
Nonetheless, i hope they soon get a better understanding at each other, because it’s really bad to live in fear for a long time… and also because that kind of team can become interesting -
I thing change already started also, she was pondering the fact that he’s good to his allies a couple of times already, and she started to get that it’s better to have him as an ally.
I hope the new bit of arc will clean up the mess, because it is indeed getting painfully long ;)
It’s exhausting because Arsene takes pleasure in scaring Regina. Teasing someone only fun when both on the same page, he’s been constantly threatening her life as a joke. The FL was a normal modern person (a student too if I assume) and except the opening the carriage door part she’s doing well enough. I’ve seen worse FL who are more clueless and does dumber impulsive action. She tried her best to stay out of trouble but trouble just comes her way anyway, what is she gonna do?
