Dietrich doesn't have a complete understanding of what "caring" is or what emotions are exactly, but if you are reading while paying attention with the context clues, it's easy to see that has learned to care for her and is feeling guilt but he can't go back to his words anymore, Baal on the other hand does not feel emotions, which explains why he's okay with Anisa being the sacrifice.
