I read this awhile ago so this is a vague description, but the Prince teleports there because the bracelet broke and he takes Aria away. I'm pretty sure Mielle gets blamed for the incident instead of Aria (which was her plan). The dad doesn't die, but I think he goes into a coma for awhile and his health goes downhill from this incident.
