He's not playing the part, he's the embodiment of innocence, as well as the loss of it due to the discovery of different aspects of his new sexual life. He's also not an assertive character at all, so add that to his inexperience and of course he'll be confused and conflicted, that's just what the facts of his character portrays as of the present. You probably have a preferred image in your head as to what's an ideal uke, but if all uke-like characters were the same, then the BL genre would just be too typical and boring. There's a reason why all uke-type guys have slight and distinct differences between each other, even though they're all in similar situations in the end.
