I think the lack of world-building and basically not-good execution of the 5th chapter is what gets me. Everyone can "infer" that the cat is half-human (which isn't good in itself because it wasn't made clear by the author), but that makes the world fall apart. If he's half-human (which, biologically is impossible if science in this world is the same as our own), are the other cats half-human too? If they're partially human, are they are incapable of speaking human languages? Are cat-human hybrids seen as second-class citizens (I mean, the cat was being given/sold away)???
I guess I shouldn't read into this that much and just accept it as gratuitous "cute-neko-boy falling for human" trope. :-)
