I agree LDR you got it right! the blonde guy is dead, in the first page it says "I can only embrace you in my happy memories". and when he talks about that memory (when blonde's dad beats them up) he's thinking about possibilities and how he could've change things In other word it's his biggest regret/ burden because that day is the last time they saw each other
