Because out of 50 kids there's going to be a higher chance of having a really talented kid that's good for the throne, where as if you only have three they might all suck. Also back then birthrate were really low as a lot of children died during child birth with their mother and didn't make it past the first few years due to disease.
Maybe childbirth deaths can be prevented with magic or some other fantasy stuff? So who knows if that's the case here.
