Because he has the purest Psionic blood and is the most powerful, even though it drains him and causes him to faint and get very ill when he overdoes it. They are hoping he can produce an heir as powerful (if not more) as him, without the health issues so as to continue the strength of the family lineage.

I thought the older brother was cute and funny at first (and in the side stories he still is), but now he is REALLY starting to annoy me. Couldn't even TALK to Torlese first. Just "TAKE THE KID!" SERIOUSLY?!? It didn't occur to him that his little brother might panic at his child disappearing?!? I hope he gets raked over the coals by his precious little brother.
BTW, is there a novel for this and is it translated to English? There are a LOT of notes about what has happened in scenes that we aren't shown and some of them are extremely detailed and seem rather important. Like the 3 forest masters thing....
