Saying yes under duress is not consent. Consent is invalide if the victim fears for his life or repercussions. Then only reason he “offered” in the first place was because he thought it’s only way for him to escape without being followed. Another thing is that consent can be retracted at any point. J asked him to stop several times without avail. So by definition it is rape. Now if we want to talk law it’s all relative. A lot of countries have very shitty law that don’t protect victims, but at the end of the day that doesn’t change the facts at hand.
I hope this clarifies your doubts

Forcing someone is rape and since he was blackmailed it is rape. Not to mention he said stop multiple times during which makes it rape. In court the burden of proof is very hard to meet for rape and you could lose the whole case if you don’t meet the burden of proof. In order to make sure that the victim gets any kind of justice at all prosecutors will usually lower the charge from rape to sexual assault. Also 9 years for attempted murder is way too light. I understand the confusion though.

Damn reading this remind of my Law Subject which gave me lots of head ache when trying to memorize the articles. Though there is a different definition or line drawn for consent in every state. What you said is applicable to my country as well but I'm not sure if it is same for the story. After all it was mentioned in the previous chapters on how shitty their justice system is.
Please don’t bash on me …
Why do people they call it rape when he was the one asking for it? Sexual assault yes I understand because he didn’t want it, but he still said yes to escape from his grasp… but rape is a totally different crime from sexual Assault (I looked it up to make sure and it’s true).
I was confused because a lot of people was saying that it was rape, but in the story it said Sexual Assault. Im glad that the author/translator understood the difference and put down sexual assault rather than rape.
HOWEVER…
I just want to confirm to everyone that the law is different in every state and country, so what I say may or may not even apply, but where I live there’s a difference. (But now I just answered my own question and now I sound like there’s no reason for me to put this up )
But I will still put this up because this is just some information I researched because I thought that it wasn’t rape while other people were saying that it was rape.
