I thought he was referring to himself, since they were talking about his 'perfect' reputation, and then he said 'it has to be perfect', which might've meant his own facade, and the fact that if he destroys it, he'll be 'damaged'.
I'm not too sure though, but we'll see. If not, then I agree, it's really foolish of him to say and I absolutely don't support their relationship.
