He had no other chance & she decided to die herself by playing the villain, he originally wanted to hide her in a village far away, if he still decided to protect her after her pretending to be bad, the people would only blame him & not trust him, he had to reconstruct he kingdom, and she knew that, which is why she decided to sacrifice herself. This is how things work.
