The dress they wore was actually popularized by Marie Antoinette and is called Chemise a la Reine and just like in the story, it became controversial because it looked like a sleepwear but eventually became a trend and marked a transition in women’s fashion for it was made with light materials and completely removed the usage of corsets which are extremely uncomfortable.
