When you go more into the chapters, that sentence smhow feels out of place. But if you hear the drama cd, it was actually "because my mom pushed me off the stairs", which actually makes sense why he was afraid of height and his mother.
2nd,this story actually took place in Osaka, and everyone here uses Osaka dialect. And of course, the drama cd is in the cute Osaka dialect too u know! (yup, i'm a fan of osaka-ben..teehee!). And if you read without the drama cd, you might miss the fact that they are living in Osaka.
