i guess they are directly translating it
I guess its cultural difference cuz in asia we always call people who are older as a sign of respect as sister/brother if directly translates even if we are not related. This is same when KR calling hyung/noona. So im pretty sure people would find it less strange if not translate so just think it like that

Same even in Turkiye call older people either aÄŸbey or abla which stands for older brother or sister, it's very respectfull especially when its someone you don't know
