I don't think Damon misunderstood, because nothing was told to him to begin with. All he knew is that he let Colton know that he's interested in joining the exhibition and didn't get any feedback regarding it.
And now he hears about the exhibition from their friend, as well as said friend getting the final slot. So now he feels like he's left with nothing.
It's heartbreaking tbh. I've been in that spot, being left in the dark, that even surprises that come after still has that tinge of disappointment.
