I'm sorry if my explanation sucks but this is the best I can do. So the Emperor hosted this ball to see what Grace (OP) is like and made it mandatory that Penelope's family, the Duke or Grace, and the Duke's best friend attend. So this of course was a trap because he was either going to kill OP at the ball or at the Dukes residence. Grace didn't attend because the Duke family has this mandatory ceremony yearly to receive magic. When the Duke found it it was a trap he told his best friend to go because the Emperor held him up, then he left afterwards. This ultimately left Penelope unguarded and trap as a hostage at first. However, as time went on she is able to appeal to the humane side of the Emperor and make him fall for her. She's basically helping him heal his trauma or whatever to know he isn't alone. The thing is Penelope can leave but in Grace's words she can't leave someone that needs care/help, plus Penelope said she doesn't want to leave because she sees him like how she saw Grace when they first met (probably hopeless, alone, and unloved). She did say that even though she is staying, she doesn't love the emperor nor will she interfere in their plans to overthrow him.

Their relationship and constantly interaction irks me because this is the very man that was twisted enough to kill Graces parents because they were too powerful and im the way (maybe also jealousy).

Omgg thank u so soo much (づ￣ ³￣)づ honestly i dont like the idea penelope getting close with the emperor, i meaann for whatt lol. Im kinda scared that Penelope will develope feelings for him but well since she said she wont lemme just trust her lol.

But still i dont really get the author intention to do that, to show us that the emperor is twisted bc of his dArK PaSt? And somehow want to show us that he's still got humane feelings bc of penelope and somehow want to redeem his wrongdoings? lol

I feel like as they plan to overthrow him she may plan a part in it like getting them in or something. But at this point I just can't keep reading about this relationship. I really am just gonna trust her too when she says she won't like him nor interfer lol. Yeah I guess that's also a part of the authors intentions (good point) but imma honestly wait till it ends too and just binge it all as well bc I don't have the patience.ತ_ತ
