he's having a mental breakdown & can't cope with being unable to protect his sister, so he's not really making sense & is deeply in denial. i think.
It's a coping mechanism for people who are beyond stressed and feeling extreme guilt. He's compartmentalizing his memories and feelings so he can dissociate from the ones thst make him feel bad.
This is also very common in people who have suffered prolong abuse.

So he can't leave cause he feels like he did something wrong by leaving his sister alone but he doesn't remember his sister? What???
