you're probably right- i was rereading the manga, and in the second chapter the dad is talking about how good his son is at the craft and makes a throwaway comment about his older son being jealous of him, before he's cut off. it is mentioned casually, but with all the emphasis on the older brother and how the boss is acting suspiciously, i'd be more surprised if that weren't the case.
