I think they want people to go insane. They want to make everyone crazy so that almuton or whatever it’s called can eat them and consume them into its own system. Like what fungi do. And that would force the high elite espers including his son to come and defeat the almuton thing. Basically fattening up the demonic being and also killing of their previous guide so that they have to kill it. Either for self preservation or for revenge. He’s forcing their hand. Send weak people in because you don’t want them coming out anyway. That’s why they kill them if they escape the gate.

After some re-reading, you have a point. The center is trying to force erewhon's hand to cooperate.
That makes them all the more annoying and excessively greedy
'Cause for me, it's such a waste of manpower and as evidenced by the latest chapter, too many things can go wrong.
If their gamble fails, they loose both yugeon AND shinjae (most powerful esper known, i think), which further puts them in a disadvantage.
It's a poorly planned desperate measure = reflection of center's failing status and power

It’s not for erewhon tho. It’s for shinjae cause he’s the strongest. Basically dickhead father raised shinjae as a weapon. He wants to see the weapon in its full glory so he’s creating a situation in order to force its full glory. But shinjae is a human (are espers considered humans? Idk) and not a tool like a lawn mower or a pair of scissors. It’s exactly as you said. Poorly planned desperate measures but what they didn’t count on was that yugeon has been in the gates before and therefore wouldn’t completely lose it. If shinjae hadn’t tried to approach him, he might have just been able to find his way back out. I think he only lost his mind because he was approached and his brain couldn’t fathom that shinjae would come for him (he’s not been the caring lover he likes to portray himself as after all) and therefore his brain says it has to be someone else. It’s a real shame though. Espers have guides to reset their insanity but guides have no one. That’s why they shouldn’t be in the gate in the first place. Putting guides in the gate to go insane means less guides per esper which means less espers cause they go insane and need to be put down. The father has made the worst decision he could ever make. It goes beyond just losing their best esper and guide duo. They would end up losing majority of all guides and espers. Once guides find out that guides were forced into the gate, they won’t ever want to deal with it or espers again in fear of being drugged and taken to the gate but also espers won’t go because the gate to almuton (I still don’t know how to spell that lol) is too high of a level and if shinjae dies in the gate then there’s NO chance for anyone to make it out. The gate would open and consume the whole planet because no guide or esper would be dumb enough to trust the centre or themselves to not go insane or get consumed. This decision could cost them the entire world refusing to help close the gates. That’s how bad this is. From political and economic and strategic standpoints, this is the worst case scenario. He’s in charge of all 3 of those sectors when it comes to decisions. It wouldn’t surprise me if he was taken off his seat and executed. All for mad scientist greed.

Of course! I really like stories like this that really make you think every little thing through. I’ve recently gotten into some romance and fantasy books that have military themes and shows a lot of tactical thinking so I’ve picked up on some things which made it easier to understand this. I’m glad my hobby managed to help someone else understand better too
NO.
Just NO.
How much more are they meant to break?!
Please don't give them anything worse.
Let this be the rock bottom, from which things will get better afterwards.
Side note:
Could it be, the members of the association have been brought to insanity because of their close proximity to the worst dungeon?
If you think about it, forcing inexperienced guides into the most high level dungeon wherein espers go bat shit insane makes no sense.
