It’s just cultural. Has nothing to do with him relying on his parents for money. The things people will do to please their parents sometimes

Marriage/divorce culture in Japan is crazy. My mom is Japanese (I’m half). She had a baby with this Japanese guy when I was maybe 12?? Anyway, they have their baby, and my mom tells him, I don’t want to be with you unless we are getting married. So either we get married or we aren’t together at all. But he doesn’t want to get married to someone who already has 3 previous kids and is divorced. He feels like he can’t marry someone like that because he thinks his parents won’t accept it. That’s crazy though because he still wants to be with her, just not married. Also, my siblings and I lived full time with our dad, not her. We have never even met this man so it’s not like he’s going to be playing dad to us. Plus, his parents already know about the baby. Not really at all relevant to the story. It’s just interesting the ridiculous ways the divorce/marriage culture is.
Edit: just to add, It’s been 10 years at this point. My point in sharing was to point out how weird things can be in Japan regarding dating/marriage with divorced people, especially with kids
