Makes no sense that MC is poor, dude was smart enough to study abroad and it was mentioned that they saw each other for the last time at their graduation so MC graduated with his economics degree. Why is the MC poor? Hyacinth was better with this trope story, in that the MC was comfortable even if he wasn't super rich.

I haven't read Hyacinth but man the eye roll I did when MC said he can't afford to take a day off (it's just so cliche) and the Gentleman Childhood friend was right there with every Solution
Right, what was the point him being a nerd if can't even afford a minimum standard of living lol. The clichés are just there for the cliché, they make no sense in a coherent way.
The only thing I can think of is that he has to raise the child possibly on his own?
Or maybe to keep a low profile and not work in the same industry that they studied for.
