Well as someone who grew up in a shaman family I can tell you people do ritual for everything. They deny science. If you are sick or gay or lesbian they will perform ritual on you, change your name to get rid of the evil spirit inhabiting you, etc. Vin Jin and his mom seems to have been victims of a cult.
