I'm honestly surprised with Ernst and how the author decided to prolong him not knowing that Peony is actually Gabriella. It's almost realistic that he is still holding on to the memory of his wife. It was just 6 years. No one who loved someone deeply and lost them through death will be able to move on as quickly as anyone would think he should. And the guilt he feels when he thinks he already likes someone who is not his wife is understandable. ;)
