Well, it's like the author's afraid of creating a different ending where the good men get the love they deserve. They create a red-flags ML and don't make a change from there.
No the author is not afraid. They choose this endind because it makes their stories popular. Readers get emotionally attached to the story and can't get enough. You write a story to make money and the popularity of your story means money!
Go read "Back to school" the second Lead won. The author knows how to end the story. The ML left the country for four or five years,he came back and went to meet the uke and give flower to the uke. The ML wanted to hug last embrace. But the uke didn't hug him, the uke said we are not friends anymore, basically he's saying they are like strangers.. ML cried. The uke move on and have a happy ending with the second Lead. ( The second Lead was just like Cain, golden retriever personality, caring, loving, adorable)
