it's confusing sometimes. when that happens, I reread the previous chapters up to the latest one and that's when I get it. I don't know if it works for everyone tho :)
You probably just triggered the entire TG fandom. Though I do agree with you. I got lost after chapter 20-30. So I'm pretty amazed you kept up that long. I mean... it feels so watered down now. The more I read it, the less I understand at this point. I see names I don't remember and I see characters I don't recognize. I just come to look at the art now and how my favorite characters are faring in the sequel. (because they compose 75% of the characters I recognize)
I'm honestly just skimming through chapters now. I'll give it a proper read through when it's finished, because as you said, things are a bit confusing. The last several chapters are better, but earlier chapters were so chaotic, I got lost.
Honestly kaneki became kinda unrecognizable to me. AND HE IS MY FAV. I guess the old ghoul kaneki look suited him. I swear the mask had me confused, and then his name made me wonder what the hell was going on. Welp, he's ascended to yakuza boss now
you just need to keep rereading. it didn't make sense to me sometimes until i did a 2nd reread.
Honestly, ask questions if you're confused. Someone here might just be able to explain it. I'd also point you to Tumblr... there's a lot of people over there that break down each chapter and have helped me really dive into deeper understandings of each one.
