Their father didn't particularly care of his family as long as there is an heir and his brother is the oldest so he just let it be.
When they were kids, her mother love them both equally but the older brother started noticing that Karhan could do better than him in every aspects like swordmanship, studying, etc. He got worried that Karhan would be the heir instead of him so he started framing Karhan of things so wicked that he didn't do. Like putting bird's corpse and his mother's room and many other things. Their mother started being afraid of Karhan because she saw Karhan smiling innocently at her while this is happening, she thought Karhan was like some kind of incarnation of evil.
She then behaved harshly towards Karhan because she thought Karhan never reflected for what he did (for something that he did not actually do and did not know happening towards her mother).
Meanwhile his brother cleverly erased the traces of evidences and eyewitnesses.

Omg the brother ... but also the mother like when loved them equally but she didn't suspect a thing and just believed he's done all those bad things just because someone said so when it clearly seemed like he didn't know anything abr it ... like just do some thinking and you'll realise it doesn't add up!

They were just kids at that time. When the older brother cleverly and wickedly cleaning up the evidences like getting rid and firing the eyewitnesses, Karhan was still a bundle joy of innocence so he just did not realize what was happening in the house.
He was just feeling confused because all of sudden his mother started hating on him blaming him for not being a good kid when he still did not realize what is a good kid and why is he a bad kid.
Then one day he was forced out the house to go to war when he was still a teenager.
The good employee was getting laid off one by one when he was at war and when he come back, there is no longer any employee in the house on his side.

Just as he was suddenly forced out of the house, he was suddenly called back to become an heir (but only the people inside the house know that he is only a temporary heir) because the older brother killed the son of some count under drugs so their house is in need of a huge amount of money to pay compesation to the count. Her mother was basically trying to commit fraud by trying to marry Karhan into a rich household as an heir to get money (otherwise it could hard to marry him off because she intentionally spreads bad rumors of Karhan in the battlefield for her oldest son justification to return someday)

It was revealed when the oldest son killed his father because he was considering to give the heir position to Karhan as Karhan has made a huge achievements in the war against barbarian through diplomacy meanwhile the older brother tried to sabotage it by attacking the barbarian in the truce period risking the hard earned diplomacy.
The mother started having doubts then because she saw it with her own eyes how the older son killed his own father. She thought her son accidently killed the son of the count and activately defended him so it was like she go struck by the thunder in the middle of the day.
She was pretending to cooperate with him first by covering up the count's death as illness as she is afraid that she would be the next target.
Meanwhile she started investigating the truth by looking for what happened only to just found out that none of the current employees know what had happened back there therefore she looked for her former employees though not many wanted to meet her eventhough she promised them money. The one who met her did so because they were concerned about Karhan.
Through their testimonies she was choked by the truth and regretted it immensely. But what happened has had happened and the scars she gave Karhan were too big to mend it up. Although she said sorry Karhan did not forgive her because it was far too late and she also knew it. Yet Karhan still did not wish for her to be unhappy because of him. Karhan just didn't want to think about the whole family fiasco and just wish to be happy as he is now with MC and her family.
Then she supported Karhan at the elder meeting and reveal her older son evil deeds. She went back to her parents home and worked to pay the debt bit by bit that she inflicted the house with from the private money lenders by putting the mansion as colleteral to pay the money compesation to the count (which son got killed by her oldest son)
