They knew each other in Highschool, ML once lashed out at MC. He liked MC since then but never developed the relationship because of his mental state. You can think of MC as a white moonlight, someone ML constantly thinks about, loves but thinks he is beyond his reach.
Now I really want to know their history. Didn't they mention that they already knew each other from their high school days? Did ML fall in love with MC back then, too? Why didn't ML approach MC at that time? I have so many questions.
