its more so a case of accidental miscommunication which tends to happen in relationships where one of the people is used to holdin in their issues or problems which is what lyle had to do for so long until he met ash. also probably why ash didnt message him the whole day is because he went into rut

but thats how he had to grow up. he did that as a way to protect his younger brother so he can live how he wanted. karlyle held in his problems and issues so as not to upset is grandfather or mother(?) and because of that he struggles with self doubt. but he seems to be dealing with it better since he drove to ashs place at the end of this chapter to check on him but if this was him in the past he wouldve just stayed in his bed worrying instead. I agree with that .. someone finally said it, since karlyle always felt insecure about doing less in their relationship and. Counted more on ash fr having been with more people than him so..he basically shys away from expressing himself
