Well maybe that is also the case but Meimei cried so hard in the end which implies heartbreak. You can also see that she never say bad things about him to Maomao. I was crying like ugly crying in that part. While Im happy for Lakan, I felt so sad for Meimei. I hope she gets a good husband

This is something that you might have missed. Meimei was actually in love with Lakan for a very long time. This explains why she was the only one who is kind to Lakan even after what happened to Maomao mother. This is in contrast to what Lakan thought that she might be just guilty bec she was the attendant that was asked to go away when Lakan and maomao's mom had s*x. It was also mentioned that meimei was also fidgety whenever he talks and being praised by Lakan which already pertains that she has a crush on him. If that's the case why did she refused when Lakan was about to choose her? As she said she has a pride as a courtesan. They are proud of their beauty and capturing and hearts of men to the point of ensnaring them so that they would not choose replace them with another woman, so no courtesan would just be okay for "settling with them". She opened the window in that part to see if he can still recognise her voice which I know deep in her heart she already knew bec for sure she already know of Lakan's condition. She might also know that to Lakan she is just one of those faceless figures so since she has her pride she challenged her lov and made him choose.

You know the saying the first one who says i love you loses. Some courtesans specially the high ranking courtesans are. They trick the man they potentially want to take them whether they love them or not instead of saying they love them or throwing themselves. This is to make sure that they have full control and will not leave/replace them. Anyway, from the start that mao's mom has been meeting Lakan and even till the whole shenanigan that she caused maomao's mom never once said she love him which made meimei hope that she can still win Lakan's heart. That's why all these years she has been patient with him. Listening to him even if he only blabs about mao's mom etc. for the hope that he will eventually choose her sincerely. If she wholeheartedly wish for them to be together she would just smile and be happy for them. Cause if that what she was from the start, she wouldve shown Lakan where she was early on cause it's obvious that Lakan still loves her. . When she said that line she broke down and she was crying because that signifies the end of her hope and her unrequited love. Poor meimei. Years and years of unrequited love.
