I think he was going for the beers to get drunk. He had just returned from his brother's funeral (He's Hirono from the first story)
Yeah, I was kind of surpised that the scanlation crew didn't clarify this: beside Hirono's beer can were Buddhist prayer beads, the like that you have on you for a funeral. It's a very distinct symbol in Japan, that western readers wouldn't neccesarily pick up on.
