What I’m starting to realize is that the word “toxic” is used so often that it’s starting to lose the weight it’s supposed to have. A behavior is no longer wrong or evil. The moment the word “toxic” is used, the relationship automatically becomes a negative that dictates whether people are morally right or morally wrong for supporting it. The moment the word is used due to a character’s behavior, it’s as if there can be no coming back from it, as if a lane has been picked and the character no longer has any other layer . Most of the time when people use it, I’m wondering why that label is used to describe the entirety of a relationship because it twists it into something that reduces the relationship to one aspect. We’re no longer thinking about the character’s traits and circumstances, anything they do that isn’t what we judge to be right, simply put an emphasis on this idea that they’re as toxic as they’ve been labeled to be. I loathe that word with a passion. It’s become as redundant as people who say “I love you” on reflex rather than because they’ve truly examined the depth of their feelings.
