The way I understood that actually was that he can control the ink in the kannagis cos he's half sea being. Or maybe like he was absorbing them cos he's already a sea being so it won't do shit on him. I've also realized that the ability (may be) not exclusive on Alto since the other sea beings know what he's doing to the kannagis. So maybe its a just sea being ability to control the ink.
Oh yeah. If it is just an ability to control it rather than exclusively heal it, it must be able to work unconsciously since he was a clueless kid when he first started healing kannagi. The worldbuilding of the island is so cool

If alto is half sea-being, how does he heal the kannagi?? You would think since his father’s from the sea, he’d actually corrupt them further, right?? Or is it a special characteristic only present in mixed beings?
