I think it's because whether he lost or tied, it still ruined his winning streak. A lot of athletes won't see a tie as a satisfactory and will even find it to be more insulting than just a loss because it means they were so close to winning. There's a whole psychological theory around it. Athletes who win a silver medal as opposed to gold or bronze are generally the most unhappy of the 3.
