He doesn’t sign up for war. There’s a conscription which means it’s a draft. All first born men of eligible age have to go to war. I think one exception might have been if they’re married which is why she ran and asked him to marry her the day before he was supposed to leave. Isabel the sister also pushed for her to write letters to Ian and they both began getting to know each other in that way. I like this plot because it’s semi realistic as to what soldiers with PTSD have to go through. I’ve met men who have had it and it’s very very saddening. Most can’t sleep at night and any noise takes them back to their most traumatic moments. I think the pace might be throwing you off but the change in emotions and the anxiety of knowing what will happen to someone you cared about is realistic. Most people don’t have linear thoughts.

bruh I cannot with this back and fourth, like I kno he at war but the plot is so frustrating
mans mistreats her when they are married, she doesn't like him cuz he's mean, mans starts to fall in love with her, she's like wow he's not that bad after all, mans gets hurt and starts to mistrust her, he's like "imma act mean again," she don't like him cuz he's mean again and dies, then it's their next life, she trying to avoid him after all that, he's like "wow she's diff from the other girls imma ask to marry her," she gets offended cuz he doesn't care whether she loves him and doesn't rlly love her???, "but what else? is beauty all that matters to you?" ahh response (suuuuuper unclear I don't even remember her bs reason), he's all butt-hurt cuz she said no and signs up for war cuz of glory or whatevs, she's all "no don't go you'll get hurt I take it back I'll marry you like chill," and now he feels offended cuz she pities him and is like "nahhh I gotta serve my country girl USA USA," she starts catching feelings cuz he at war and she starts getting army wife butterflies for some reason, he feels all protector provider,
and now he's emo.
and he's gonna come back all "you know that I can't show you me, give you me," and now SHE gotta chase HIM
