Main story is published in a bi-monthly magazine. So, normally it's every two months, but sometimes sensei skips magazine volumes, or goes on a 1 year and a half hiatus (like what happened). Extras are more random since they're more often than not not published in this perticular magazine but on various other sources.

1 year ????? Σ( ￣□￣||) I never knew that !! But why? And why does sensei skips the magazine volumes? Is she sick? :c Or just laziness? xD

Sometimes she's sick, sometimes who knows. She does take extra long to draw her artwork, so that may contribute to it, if she feels she won't make it. Then again, she still draws Crimson Spell, which is published every other months as well, so she has to manage both series.

If we compare to other manga with Hiatuses:
Berserk = the art is super fucking detailed, he spends more than 1 day on a page. So what he generally does is spend the 1-2 year hiatus putting the chapters together then releasing the chapters at once.
Hunter X Hunter = laziness for sure. The art compared to Berserk is very low quality, so that isn't an issue. And he likes playing Dragon Quest.
Nana = she's been ill for a long time, sadly.
Vagabond = laziness. There isn't much info on why, apparently to work on his other manga, but that is also on hiatus.

So with VF it's Most likely laziness. I'm not 100% sure so someone can correct me.

With VF it's also months of working on finishing and polishing drawings for volume 8' release, as well as offering tons of extras on top of continuing the publication of Crimson Spell.

It's always with the best mangas that this happens, sadly.
Well, that's tough, but hope she doesn't collapse like with Nana !! I want to see the end of it.
